The VNREDSat-1 satellite initiative represents a pivotal milestone in the collaborative space technology efforts between Vietnam and France. This program not only set the stage for the creation of next-generation satellites but also included significant elements like technology transfer, training, and the enhancement of Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. The VNREDSat-1, which was launched on May 7, 2013, marked Vietnam’s entry into the realm of Earth observation satellites. Officially operational since September of the same year, the satellite has far exceeded its anticipated five-year lifespan, still functioning effectively in 2026, demonstrating remarkable longevity.
This program has been instrumental in advancing Vietnam’s expertise beyond just satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training both in France and in Vietnam, equipping them with essential skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, these engineers have shifted from merely following imported procedures to independently resolving technical issues, showcasing their growing proficiency. Concurrently, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages everything from imaging requests and satellite control to data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, aiding in areas such as environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and activities related to defense and security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program laid a crucial technical and human resource foundation for future satellite projects. However, he pointed out that achieving greater technological independence will necessitate further advancements in various fields, including satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. This ongoing development is essential for Vietnam to enhance its self-reliance in space technology.
A new chapter of collaboration was initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to engage in long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are currently exploring options for a next-generation Earth observation system and considering technological possibilities for the proposed VNREDSat-2. This future collaboration is expected to emphasize greater Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications.
The overarching goal of these initiatives is to transition from the mere purchasing of satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology. This approach will enable Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and ultimately develop future generations of satellite technology independently. Areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads present substantial opportunities for Vietnam to bolster its domestic expertise and capabilities in this high-tech field.
