Playing in Harare, Australia triumphed over Zimbabwe by 59 runs, setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the series.
Australia, having won the toss, opted to bat first and posted a formidable score of 294-8 in their allotted 50 overs. The highlight of the innings was Matt Renshaw, who achieved his maiden ODI century with a score of 109. His performance was bolstered by key partnerships with Alex Carey and Ollie Peake, which were crucial in setting a challenging target for the Zimbabwean team. Despite the efforts of Zimbabwe’s bowler Newman Nyamhuri, who took an impressive 5-62, Australia managed to maintain a competitive edge.
In their chase, Zimbabwe encountered early setbacks, losing four wickets quickly. However, a strong partnership between Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza offered a glimmer of hope. The duo put together a 98-run stand, with Ervine scoring 59 before falling to Nathan Ellis. Raza contributed 57 but was eventually bowled by Spencer Johnson, causing Zimbabwe’s chase to falter.
Nathan Ellis was instrumental in dismantling Zimbabwe’s batting lineup, ending with exceptional bowling figures of 5-31 from 9.1 overs. He played a pivotal role in cleaning up the lower order, ensuring that Zimbabwe was bowled out for 235 in 45.1 overs.
The series will continue with the second ODI scheduled to take place in Harare on Friday, followed by the third and final match on Sunday. With Australia having taken the lead, Zimbabwe will look to regroup and come back strong to level the series.
