Việt Nam and Japan are set to bolster their defence partnership, focusing on strategic areas such as military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defence industry. This collaboration also extends to United Nations peacekeeping missions and initiatives aimed at post-war recovery. In a recent meeting held in Hà Nội, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, explored ways to enhance their defence relations and ensure the effective implementation of existing cooperation agreements.
General Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to advancing consultation and dialogue mechanisms. He advocated for expanded collaboration among military branches and highlighted the importance of joint efforts in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. According to Giang, the defence relationship between Việt Nam and Japan has emerged as a key component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that binds the two nations.
Japan’s contributions to Việt Nam’s defence sector have been significant, particularly in personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery efforts. General Giang also emphasized the need for increasing scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel, with a focus on fields such as science, engineering, and technology.
The partnership between Việt Nam and Japan is robust, with Japan being one of Việt Nam’s main economic and strategic allies. Their cooperation extends beyond defence to include areas like trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. The defence collaboration has seen considerable growth, supported by regular policy discussions and military consultations between the nations.
General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s dedication to deepening defence ties with Việt Nam, expressing readiness to enhance cooperation in areas like high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. Both parties agreed to maintain close coordination to foster mutual trust, regional stability, and long-term strategic cooperation.
