Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in enhancing the partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the recently concluded ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit. This summit celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations, and Vietnam played a pivotal role in its success. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam was instrumental in promoting ASEAN’s central role and supporting initiatives to deepen the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation focused on fostering dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful resolution of disputes, while upholding international law. Vietnam took the opportunity to propose expanded collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transportation connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals align with the new frameworks adopted at the summit, which aim to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a key component of the partnership.

In a move that highlights Vietnam’s commitment to future regional cooperation, the country announced its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative is a testament to Vietnam’s dedication to fostering a new generation of regional diplomatic ties and collaborative endeavors.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their nations’ commitment to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions centered on enhancing collaboration in areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation. This meeting underscored the mutual interest in broadening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation.

Vietnam views the summit’s outcomes as vital to bolstering ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to regional stability, and unlocking new economic growth opportunities across Eurasia. The agreements and frameworks established during the summit are expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and increased stability in the region, benefiting both ASEAN member states and Russia.
