During a series of discussions held in Switzerland, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng appealed for enhanced assistance from international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF). His call to action aimed at bolstering Vietnam’s trade, investment, and long-term economic growth. Thắng’s advocacy underscores Vietnam’s dedication to a global trading framework that is grounded in established rules.
Thắng emphasized the importance of the WTO in implementing reforms and restoring its dispute resolution mechanism, which has been crucial for maintaining a fair and efficient global trade environment. He also urged the organization to broaden its horizons by addressing emerging sectors like digital trade, artificial intelligence, climate change, and the resilience of supply chains. These areas are becoming increasingly significant in the context of global economic shifts and technological advancements.
In his dialogue with the WEF, Thắng outlined Vietnam’s ambitious vision of achieving high-income status by the year 2045. To support this target, he invited the WEF to enhance collaboration through initiatives that promote investment, foster innovation, and create public-private partnerships. Moreover, he stressed the importance of developing international financial hubs as part of Vietnam’s strategy to integrate more deeply into the global financial system.
Both the WTO and the WEF responded positively to Thắng’s proposals. They expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s economic reform efforts and assured continued cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and capacity-building. This ongoing partnership is viewed as vital for Vietnam as it navigates the complexities of a rapidly evolving global economy.
