The launch of VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite on May 7, 2013, marked a significant milestone in space technology collaboration between Vietnam and France. The satellite, which was officially handed over for operation in September of the same year, exceeded its initial five-year lifespan and continues to function in 2026, now in its 14th year. This program laid the groundwork not only for future cooperation on next-generation satellites but also for technology transfer, training, and enhancing Vietnam’s domestic capabilities in space technology.
Through this program, Vietnamese engineers gained crucial expertise beyond just satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, they received extensive training in both France and Vietnam, learning about system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, they transitioned from merely following existing procedures to independently resolving technical issues. This shift underscored Vietnam’s growing proficiency in satellite technology.
The VNREDSat-1 program also facilitated the development of an integrated remote-sensing system in Vietnam, managing everything from imaging requests to data distribution. Since 2020, the satellite has provided nearly 30,000 images crucial for environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, and socio-economic development, as well as defense and security activities. Despite these achievements, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology President Trần Hồng Thái emphasized the need for greater technological self-reliance, particularly in areas like satellite design, electronics, and ground systems.
A new chapter in Vietnam-France space cooperation began during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. This collaboration aims to develop a next-generation Earth observation system and explore technologies for a proposed VNREDSat-2.
The future of this partnership is expected to involve increased Vietnamese participation in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, and data applications. Areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and selected sensors offer opportunities for Vietnam to strengthen its domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to shift from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and develop future satellite technologies.
