Vietnam and Malaysia are actively seeking to enhance their defence collaboration, aiming to bolster bilateral relations and contribute to the stability of the Southeast Asian region. This initiative was highlighted during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, and Malaysia’s departing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The Vietnamese minister commended the ambassador for his pivotal role in advancing cooperation between the two countries.
General Giang emphasized the significant strides made in the realm of defence relations. These advancements include consistent military exchanges, policy dialogues, collaborative training efforts, and participation in both international and multilateral events. Such engagements underscore the commitment of both nations to strengthening their defence ties.
The Vietnamese defence leader stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in implementing current agreements and expressed a desire for more robust engagement through high-level interactions and established defence cooperation frameworks. Inviting Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026 in Hanoi was one such gesture aimed at reinforcing these connections.
During the talks, Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai expressed gratitude to Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support throughout his tenure. He shared his optimism that the defence partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia will continue to thrive, contributing to peace and prosperity across the region.
