On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing held a significant meeting in Hà Nội, underscoring a mutual desire to enhance bilateral ties and broaden cooperation across various sectors. This visit marked Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural trip to Vietnam in his capacity as President. During the meeting, Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s initiatives aimed at achieving stability, fostering reconciliation, promoting dialogue, and spurring economic development.
President Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged Vietnam’s impressive socio-economic progress and its growing influence on both regional and international stages. He expressed an eagerness to learn from Vietnam’s developmental strategies. Furthermore, he emphasized Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining its longstanding friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam. Both leaders applauded the recent advancements in their countries’ bilateral relations and committed to enhancing high-level exchanges to build political trust. They advocated for the revival of crucial cooperation mechanisms in areas such as trade, security, and defense.
A major area of focus for both nations is the strengthening of defense and security collaboration, which is poised to become a cornerstone of their relationship. The two countries have plans to intensify efforts to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, they aim to expand military training programs, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and cooperate on addressing non-traditional security threats.
Economic cooperation was another pivotal topic of discussion. Both Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to explore opportunities to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar showed keen interest in attracting Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. Discussions also covered improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with intentions to restore direct flights and develop joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
In terms of regional dynamics, Vietnam pledged to continue its collaborative efforts with ASEAN members to maintain constructive dialogue with Myanmar. Both leaders expressed support for resolving disputes through peaceful means in alignment with international law. Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In reciprocation, the Myanmar President invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a suitable time.
