In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Vietnamese Vice President Võ Thị Ánh Xuân and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze convened in Tbilisi on October 12. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, education, and infrastructure, reflecting a shared vision for enhanced collaboration between the two nations.

Prime Minister Kobakhidze emphasized Georgia’s dedication to strengthening ties with Vietnam, pointing to the notable growth in economic relations and the complementary strengths of both countries. Over the past five years, bilateral trade has surged sixfold, and the first half of 2026 saw a 41% increase in Vietnamese tourists visiting Georgia. Both leaders expressed interest in enhancing transport connectivity, including the consideration of direct flights to further facilitate this growth.

Vice President Xuân advocated for intensified diplomatic exchanges and improved market access for Vietnamese products. She identified key opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, and infrastructure, alongside fostering innovation, tourism, and education. Xuân also underscored the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges to deepen mutual understanding.

The dialogue extended to defense and security cooperation, coordination at international organizations like the United Nations, and strengthening ties between Vietnam, Georgia, and ASEAN member states. This multifaceted approach aims to create a robust framework for future interactions.

During Xuân’s visit, both countries celebrated the signing of memorandums of cooperation between their foreign ministries and agricultural and environmental authorities. They also expressed a commitment to advancing agreements on investment protection, double taxation avoidance, and visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of their bilateral relations. Plans are underway to commemorate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, marking another milestone in the partnership between Vietnam and Georgia.
