In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and France have decided to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, as confirmed during talks between Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron in Paris. These discussions, held at the Élysée Palace, centered on broadening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. The leaders also took the opportunity to review regional developments, particularly concerning Cambodia and Myanmar.
The two nations are set to bolster collaboration in key industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. As part of this strengthened relationship, France reiterated its commitment to advancing negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement, with hopes of concluding discussions within the year. This free trade dialogue was initially launched a decade ago in 2013, paused in 2014, and resumed in 2023, with Thai authorities optimistic about the economic prospects this agreement could unlock for both countries.
In addition to economic collaboration, Thailand and France have pledged to enhance their defense and cybersecurity ties. This includes joint efforts to combat cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats, reflecting a mutual interest in securing digital landscapes. On regional matters, Thailand emphasized its dedication to resolving border issues with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law frameworks.
The two governments have also unveiled plans to execute the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership from 2026 to 2028, further cementing their strategic partnership. As part of his visit to France, Anutin engaged with executives from prominent French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, aiming to attract more investment into Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries.
French corporate leaders expressed a positive outlook regarding Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus announcing plans to expand its aviation and engineering footprint in the country. This engagement underscores the confidence French businesses have in Thailand as a hub for technological and industrial advancement, setting the stage for a robust and enduring partnership between the two nations.
