Vietnam and Canada have formalized a new Action Plan to enhance their Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step towards deepening bilateral cooperation. The agreement was reached during discussions in Ottawa between Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. This plan aims to transform the commitments previously established by the leaders of both nations into practical initiatives and projects.
The comprehensive Action Plan outlines collaboration across a wide array of fields including political and diplomatic relations, trade and investment, science and technology, digital transformation, healthcare, education, energy security, sustainable development, transport, infrastructure, defense and security, law enforcement, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Both countries have committed to regularly reviewing and updating this plan to ensure its effectiveness, emphasizing the need for strong coordination between government agencies, local authorities, and businesses.
Additionally, the ministers pledged to fortify existing bilateral consultation mechanisms and explore new dialogue frameworks that hold strategic importance. They also agreed to bolster cooperation on regional and international issues through platforms such as the United Nations, ASEAN, and APEC. Vietnam and Canada expressed mutual support for hosting upcoming APEC meetings, with Vietnam set to host in 2027 and Canada in 2029, and Vietnam also backing Canada’s hosting of the Francophonie Summit in 2028.
This development represents a significant move towards enhancing the strategic relationship between Vietnam and Canada, as both nations continue to navigate the complexities of international cooperation in a rapidly changing global landscape.
