Vietnam is asserting its influence on the international stage by playing a pivotal role in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, especially following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue between the two entities. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam’s contributions were instrumental in ensuring the summit’s success, underscoring ASEAN’s centrality and supporting the deepening of its strategic ties with Russia.

The Vietnamese delegation, under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration, advocating for the peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to international law. They also proposed broadening joint efforts in critical areas such as energy, trade, agricultural development, transport connectivity, and digital transformation. These discussions laid the groundwork for new frameworks that aim to fortify ASEAN–Russia collaboration through 2030, with energy identified as a key pillar of this partnership.

A notable announcement from the summit was Vietnam’s plan to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, a move that underscores its dedication to fostering future regional cooperation. This initiative is expected to further cement Vietnam’s role as a bridge in ASEAN–Russia relations, fostering dialogue among emerging diplomatic leaders from both regions.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The talks reaffirmed the mutual commitment to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Key areas of focus included expanding cooperation in sectors such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport, highlighting the multifaceted nature of their bilateral relations.

Vietnam has indicated that the outcomes of the summit will not only bolster ASEAN–Russia relations but also enhance regional stability. By promoting economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia, both parties aim to create new opportunities and deepen their collaborative efforts in the coming years. This strategic alignment is expected to yield significant benefits across various sectors and contribute to a more interconnected and prosperous region.
